Founded by Rene Ramillon and Andre Vincent, Moncler was named from an abbreviation of the French mountain village Monestier de Clermont and was initially dedicated to sporting wear for mountaineering.

Moncler’s now infamous quilted down jacket was launched in this year and the brand was chosen to equip the Italian expedition to Karakorum, which resulted with the conquest of the earth’s second highest summit.

Renowned French explorer, Lionel Terray played a key role in Moncler’s high performance designs and along with the brand, organised the first ascent of Mount Huntington in Alaska.

For the Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France, Moncler became the official supplier of the French skiing team.

Designer, Chantal Thomass overhauled the appearance of the iconic quilted jacket with buttons, fur trimming and reversible fabrics. This event also marked the change in logo, with Mount Eguit replaced by the cockerel design.

Remo Ruffini, an Italian entrepreneur, bought the brand and has since relaunched Moncler, seeing constant and significant growth year upon year as a result.

The first boutique was opened in Paris at 5 rue du Faubourg Saint Honore, followed shortly by further stores in Italy, America and Switzerland.

A ready-to-wear haute couture collection, Moncler Gamme Rouge was launched during Paris Fashion Week, initially designed by Alessandra Facchinetti and Giambattista Valli.
