Beauty Rituals: Lillie Russo's Summertime Beauty Essentials

A professional MUA’s makeup bag is the secret to their success. Containing more lotions and potions than you could wave a mascara wand at, you can trust that any product edit of theirs will be transformative. To help us contend with the summertime heat, humidity and potential sun damage, we’ve consulted London-based makeup artist Lillie Russo to find out how she keeps her makeup cool in the warmer months. Very kindly, Lillie let us have a snoop around her beauty bag and has nominated her top ten products for summer – her desert-island products, if you will. With a portfolio of fashion editorials including Hunger TV and Vogue Italia behind her, she’s a rising star on the beauty scene. Take her advice while you can still get it.

On sun protection . . .
I have porcelain white skin so using SPF 50+ is a necessity for my face and body during summer months! I don’t sunbathe, but if you have to, avoid sunbathing at peak times.

On the power of makeup . . .
I believe it is all about how it makes you feel inside. It is not about pleasing others; it is whether it pleases the wearer. It is so gratifying doing my job – the joy I get when a client is palpably more confident after I have done their makeup. Just a small amount, done correctly, can really change someone’s attitude and how they feel about themselves.

On getting bronzed safely . . .
Sun-cream naturally gives your skin a glossy sheen, and then you can layer your tinted moisturiser over the top. If you have naturally tanned skin, using a tinted moisturiser with SPF is enough protection.

On her summer beauty regime . . .
I always remove makeup using Bioderma Sensibio H20. I then cleanse my face using my Foreo and Omorovicza Cleansing Foam. I spritz my face with Omorozica Queen of Hungary Mist to close my pores. I use Elizabeth Arden Superstart Skin Renewal Booster as my serum, then Omorovicza Illuminating Moisturiser and Omorovzca Reviving Eye Cream.

On summer evening beauty . . .
Less is more. During summertime our skin is at its best because of the extra vitamins we get from the sun, so opt for a light base. I like to do a bronzy smoky eye using The Estee Edit Metallishadow Crème and Powder which conveniently comes in a little pot. I would recommend the shade ‘Meteor Shower’, it’s gorgeous on all skin tones.

On the most surprising thing in her makeup bag . . .
Microporous medical tape. It’s so good for eyeliner flicks! Stick it from the outer corner of your eye directed to the end of your eyebrow for the perfect eyeliner once pealed off.

On the best beauty advice anyone ever gave her . . .
I learnt early on that you shouldn’t use makeup wipes to remove your makeup, the standard ones are full of harsh chemicals! So even when you get home late and just want to flop into bed, be sure to properly remove your makeup first. It’s better for your skin in the long run.

On her favourite beauty look of all time . . .
I’m a big fan of a brown smoky eye and matt nude lip. Always been my go to look. Kevyn Aucoin does some fabulous nude lipstick shades.

On her biggest beauty secret . . .
Invest in good skincare products. Skin is not something to be stingy about if you want to age well.

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser
I’ve tried and tested and this is my favourite – it also has SPF 30.

Bioderma Micelle Solution
You’ll find this in every professional Makeup Artist kit. All cheaper copies aren’t ever as gentle.

Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist
The best face mist in the world. It smells divine and can be used throughout the day to refresh your makeup.

The Estée Edit Metallishadow Crème and Powder pot
It’s very reasonably priced and comes in many shades – a must have for dazzling eyes.

Hourglass Illume Sheer Colour Trio in Sunshine Palette
At the moment I am in love with this cream bronzer, blusher and highlighter palette. Blended well it gives a natural contour and healthy glow to the face. I also like dabbing the cream blusher on my lips.

The Estee Edit Beam Team Hydrate and Glow
This product is gorgeous on darker skin and can be used alone or under makeup. It also includes a thicker highlighter under the flip cap which is nice to use on the eyes too.

YSL Nail Lacquer
This is my favourite nail polish. Orange is a great colour for summertime, and has an on-trend 70s feel about it. It’s way more interesting than a classic red.

Kevyn Aucoin Matt Lip Colour Lipstick
The ‘Enduring’ shade is perfect for paler complexions, and I like the shape of the bullet. It’s easier to press onto lips, then just use your finger to blend it out.

Garnier Moisture Bomb Tissue Mask
This affordable Tissue Mask is really nice. I like to do one the night before I have somewhere special to go so my skin is glowing.

Aveeno Daily Moisturising Lotion
I moisturise my body everyday as soon as I get out of the bath. This one by Aveeno is nice because it isn’t strongly scented. Moisturising your body is really important, especially when you have your legs out during the summertime.
