FLANNELS Insider: Gucci Cruise 2017

Despite Alessandro Michelle’s decision to hold the Gucci cruise 2017 show at Westminster Abbey raising eyebrows, his choice of location is one that speaks truly of his belief in and pursuit of fashion that is thoughtful as well as beautiful. Managing to seamlessly sew historical references and fresh ideas into his collections, Michelle’s sources of inspiration have ranged from Catherine de’Medici to ‘70s disco and Memento Mori to NYC graffiti. As such, the 13th century cloisters of the storied building felt like the perfect place for him to present his hotly anticipated resort collection. In a year that saw Chanel take off for Cuba and Vuitton for Rio, Michelle’s choice to give such a hallowed location a new lease of life felt exciting and meaningful. Quickly interrupted by the sounds of flash bulbs and the Schola Cantorum Oxford choir singing “Scarborough Fair”. As Erin O’Connor and Jacquetta Wheeler took to the runway, in the place where the Virgin Queen is buried, Gucci reigned.
