On Trend: Italy and London's Most Stylish Men

British and Italian style. Two distinct ways of dressing that, each famous in their own right, we think have more in common than not. On first glance, the Italians appear may appear more suave and classical than us Brits. We’ve gone pretty rogue in Blighty in recent years, favouring a more casual approach to fashion. That said, London’s Saville Row is a resolutely British institution, and tailoring is no-doubt still in our DNA. A number of Londoner’s have a style that quite closely resembles our enviably stylish Italian counterparts. Take trainers with suit trousers – a favourite at FLANNELS HQ. That combination of elegant formal dressing and streetwear is one of the greatest sartorial manifestations of our famous British eccentricity. So, without further ado, here are a few slick Italians who are nailing style right now, and some British faces who have been doing it just as well.

GRAZIANO PELLÈ

Despite a few controversies, Graziano Pellè is generally viewed as a gent by both peers and fans, and we can vouch for him in the style stakes at least. The keen Instagrammer often shares snaps of himself, glass of wine in hand, dressed with typically Italian nonchalance – tastefully dishevelled linen shirts, slightly undone, are a favourite look of his and one we try (not always successfully) to emulate.

LEWIS HAMILTON

Lewis Hamilton featured on our best-dressed list only a few months ago, and as a result of his continued commitment to style he’s back on again. He’s been channelling some serious ‘90s vibes of late, but there’s no denying his penchant for snazzy tailoring and perfectly turned collars – the Italian way.

FABIO MANCINI

Perhaps photographed more often without clothes than with, Fabio Mancini is nonetheless an iconic face in the world of Italian fashion. Not to mention a body that us mortals can only dream of. The world-class model is trim and slick – the epitome of modern Italian style.

IDRIS ELBA

A mastery of layering, a dapper hand with knitwear and a keen eye for tonal colours make Idris Elba one of the most effortlessly stylish British men out there. The actor-DJ understands the importance of truly great staples and silhouettes that work for his pretty dench physique.

GIANLUIGI BUFFON

We can all learn a few style lessons from this legendary Italian goalie. Despite spending a solid portion of his life in a kit, off-pitch he adheres more typically to the classic style Italians are famous for. The button-down shirt, an appreciation for collars and a collection of fine merino knitwear are his signature. He clearly invests a lot in his wardrobe – the true test of an Italian man.

JAMES NORTON

British actor James Norton is a modern-day English gentleman. A self-confessed lover of clothes, he has a penchant for suiting, jumpers and brogues – although we’ve seen him around in a statement Versace Tee or two as well. This might be a bit of a stretch but we’re inclined to think he wears a suit as well as some of the Italians on this list.
