On Trend: The Shoe Report

This spring, we’re hungry for breezy, warm-weather footwear, the kind that slides on and off our feet without us even needing to bend down. After what has felt like a very long winter, the mercury is (finally) starting to rise, and our toes are screaming for release from the confines of heavy-soled boots. That being said, it’s worth noting that trainers are a perennial footwear style and this report is by no means a suggestion to drop them from your wardrobe. In fact, you’d have to prise them from our cold, dead hands – we’re about as willing to be separated from our sneakers as we are from our feet. But sometimes only open-toed shoes will do. Embrace high-fashion’s love of the retro-athletic footwear trend this summer with classic styles given a modern update for the new season.

THE MINIMALIST SLIDES

Off-White’s Virgil Abloh is leading the charge of urban-inspired luxury and his take on the classic pool slider is a tempting mix of streetwear detailing and laid-back summer style. The ironically named ‘Corporate’ sliders have ‘right’ and ‘left’ wittily drawn on the wrong foot and are best enjoyed when your out of office is firmly on and the pool-side vibe is cool but low-key.

THE ESPADRILLES

Espadrilles are a summer stalwart – slightly bohemian, breathable in hot weather conditions and light enough to pack, they epitomise all that holiday shoes should be. A great alternative to flip-flops or slides when the venue is slightly higher-brow, stylish men the length and breadth of the Med can be seen at the coast’s chicest bars sporting these traditional rope-soled shoes.

THE LOGO SLIDES

Whoever said that velvet and summer don’t go together clearly lacked imagination. Luckily, Fendi’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld can see beyond the constraints of widely-accepted weather-appropriate materials. These velvet logo sliders were made for posing beside the pool – just try not to get them wet. No running, no splashing and no diving, please.

THE SPORTY SANDAL

Sport sandals have taken more than a few hits over the years. The number one fashion crime of which their champions are considered guilty is combining them with socks. Whilst some of fashion’s most forward-looking street style pioneers can pull off the controversial socks-and-sandals trend, we don’t suggest you try it yourself. – unless you’re feeling brave. Instead, wear these Valentino sandals alone – practical and stylish, they’ll give your off-duty look a technical aesthetic akin to the season’s MCM Logo Sliders, – minus the bulk.
