On Trend: The Streetwear Update

It’s no secret that streetwear, in its many guises, has now become mainstream. What started decades ago in the pre-internet age as a niche mode of sartorial expression amongst different subcultures, from America’s hip-hop scene to the British casuals and ravers, has now been adopted by the world’s most celebrated fashion houses and everyone and their dad can been seen repping pieces associated with the genre. This is all good news if you and your wardrobe are coming of age and want to continue to be culturally relevant or relive your skater boy hey-day as an adult. Streetwear is no longer the reserve of rebellious youths and cool adolescents – it’s grown up, and this season’s collections have a sophisticated finish that continues to blur the lines between street and high fashion. Here’s how to wear it.

The blurring of lines between streetwear and luxury has been spearheaded by brands like Gucci who have taken a tongue-in-cheek approach to their house’s haute heritage codes by reinterpreting them through the streetwear lens. Team high-end pieces like this lip-licking hoodie with Valentino’s luxe track pants and hard-core streetwear icons by Off-White and Heron Preston.

Whilst sportswear is almost a byword for streetwear, the latter doesn’t have to incorporate the former. Make a nod to the street aesthetic by teaming a smart tailored overcoat with Off-White’s hyped industrial accessories. Worn with jeans and a crisp white Tee, it’s a sophisticated way to demonstrate your streetwear credentials.

Don’t be basic. Opt for hyper-bright, colourful pieces like this Off-White down puffer jacket and people will know you mean business. Committing to the cause with block pink and green accents from Palm Angels demonstrates that you’re serious about streetwear (but are still maintaining your sense of humour.) For the man who doesn’t do things by halves.

Mixing formal with informal pieces, something we like to call high-low dressing, is an easy way of refining your streetwear repertoire. Team a zip-through track top or hooded sweatshirt with Burberry’s checked car coat and a statement Tee. Polish with a hint of urban cool.
