Sneaker Series: The New Season Upgrade

As musical renegade Paulo Nuttini once said ‘Hey, I put some new shoes on and suddenly everything is right’. We reckon that when he said ‘shoes’, he was really referring to trainers. There are few feel-good moments that can rival that of leaving the house in a pair of fresh sneakers, which is why we’ve put together this guide to some of the new season’s most-wanted trends and styles. Kick back and read on for the best of AW18.

THE SCUMBRO TREND

This is less of a specific sneaker trend and more of an all-over look that has resulted in the rise of both ugly and skate-inspired trainers. We’ve touched on it here before – Palm Angels’ distressed canvas flames and old school originals all fall into this category and Jonah Hill, Shia LeBeouf and Justin Bieber are all bros in the scumbrotherhood. It’s now cool to dress like a badly-dressed American teenager that just rolled out of bed – music to your ears if you’ve get a penchant for labels and an aversion to shaving. It’s a trend that combines objectively shabby-looking styles with high price tags and finishes so outrageously dated that they’re now cool again. Team your skater sneakers with prohibitively expensive, oversized clothing by Off-White, Gucci and Versace and you’re there. Extra points for wearing a fleece.

THE LUXE CLASSICS

We’ve previously devoted an entire edition of Sneaker Series to both Valentino’s classic Rockrunners and Gucci’s range of designer kicks. Both brands have a well-deserved reputation for sneaker excellence and their signature styles are tried-and-tested essential footwear for any sneaker aficionado worth his salt. With styles that range from sophisticated simplicity to high-fashion exuberance, you can pick and choose how far you want to take your footwear game. An investment that will never go out of style.

THE UGLY TRAINERS

Down with subtlety and out with dated notions of ‘good taste’. The ugly trainer has been a recurring theme for a few seasons now, and things are reaching fever pitch. The world’s biggest luxury names, from Gucci and Balenciaga to Dolce & Gabbana and Fendi, appear to be trying to out-do each other in the ugly stakes, and our consumer appetite for big, chunky trainers is growing at the same speed as the trainers themselves. Sometimes referred to as the ‘dad trainer’ trend, you don’t need offspring to embrace chunky soles, lolling tongues and outsized panels. Get ugly with the Gucci Rhyton Runner and Journey Trek trainers or Valentino Bounce.

THE STREETWEAR SNEAKERS

A giant of a trend that includes ugly sneakers and skater styles, streetwear is like an umbrella term for anything currently deemed cool at street level. This ranges from hard-core, high-end streetwear models that have helped shape the subculture in its modern-day terms – in particular Off-White’s high tops – to the tech trend and runner-inspired designer sneakers like Givenchy’s TR3s. We’re seeing an increased appetite for niche trail runners and any styles that combine aesthetic chunkiness with practical fabrics and details. Watch this space.
