Style Advisor: Date Night Dressing

When it comes to dating, first impressions count. As do second, third, fourth . . . Whether you’re six years down the line or six minutes into your first drink, looking good matters. It speaks of a man who knows how to look after himself (and his future lover.) Tinder et al have made dating such a common (if unpleasant) occurrence that we thought, at this romantic time of year, we’d pay tribute to that old concept of actually making an effort for a date (although not too much, obviously.) Here are four looks to help you strike the balance between “I woke up like this” and “I know the difference between Valentino and Valentine.” Go forth and romance.

THE GASTRO PUB

Casual and relaxed. Two words that make us very happy when used in the same sentence as “date.” If you’re keeping it chill at the pub this Valentine’s Day, team a soft grey Dolce and Gabbana leather bomber with jeans and slip-on sneakers. Smart but easy.

THE ROMANTIC RESTAURANT

If you’re going down the traditional date-night route of dinner for two, dress for the occasion with a smart blazer, like this stylish tri-fabric one by Lanvin. Tone it down in brushed cotton chinos and Givenchy trainers. Slick.

THE CITY BREAK

Feeling flush? Treating someone to a city break rather than just a normal date is the ultimate signal of affection. One worth dressing up for. Pull out all the stops in a smart (but practical) parka-and-backpack combination, shirt and sweater.

THE HOTEL BAR

Re-enacting a rom-com meet cute is best executed in the low-lit bar of a swanky urban hotel. Shoes maketh the man, and this look is all about the footwear. Team black leather boots with black jeans and finish with a thin Gucci scarf. Suave.
