Style Advisor: Stone Island Check Grid

Times have changed. Perceptions of street and sportswear have shifted. Where once it was the reserve of athletes and die-hard football fans, now you’re as likely to see them at LFWM as you are in the stands. Stone Island’s reputation as an icon of technical creativity has endured since it arrived in the ‘80s, thanks in large part to the genius and legacy of its founder Massimo Osti. As a result, it’s fair to say that we await every drop with eager (understatement) anticipation.

Ahead of the new season landing, we visited an estate in North London to explore the aesthetic and practical realities of premium technical garments when worn on a city street. One of AW17’s main themes is extreme design, outlined in the brand’s exhaustive look book notes. The Stone Island Check Grid took on a chameleonic quality in relation to the concrete surroundings we found ourselves in on a bright spring day, seamlessly merging with the linear shapes and shades of grey around it. Here’s all you need to know about one of autumn’s most coveted drops.

Forever innovating, the common thread for Stone Island AW17 is PAST MEETS FUTURE. This season’s key trigger was military apparel, a foundation of all Stone Island garments since the start. AW17 combines traditional Italian craftsmanship with typically martial silhouettes and a contemporary camo print.

The collection’s hero piece and slated collector’s item is the Ice Jacket. A thermo-sensitive resin print means the camo pattern appears at lower temperatures. There’s something about Stone Island's dedication to experimental fabrication that has us all desperate to get our hands on this piece.

The glory days of sportswear are far from over, and Stone Island's return to typically athletic cuts, finishes and materials is a case in point. It’s part of their DNA, and something that makes the brand both instantly recognisable and wearable. Inspired by active sportswear, they’ve found new ways to express athleticism through both natural and man-made fabrics for the new season.

Sportswear has grown up, and as Stone Island has developed their collections, we’ve watched closely. Reworking their cult SI House Check has resulted in a modern camouflage print that verges on digital in appearance. By overlaying their identifying badge in tonal layers, a futuristic version of the storied brand appears. One defined by a visionary approach to classic design.
