Style Advisor: What To Wear On Holiday

If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Unless you’re on holiday, in which case you need to be able to stay cool in the sun. You booked your trip back in winter to avoid the eye-watering flight prices and mad scramble for last minute deals, and your holiday wardrobe merits, if not the same, then at least some forward-planning, too. From barefoot luxury on a Grecian beach to an island paradise and glamorous resorts on the Med, luxe holiday destinations are more often than not the kinds of places you want to look your best. The preparation for your holiday should set the tone for the blissful relaxation to come, not add to the stress of a two-week handover when you clock out of work. Avoid the horrors of a pitifully packed suitcase and nothing suitable to wear, and check out our guide to holiday dressing. There’s still enough time to place your order. Bon voyage!

THE BEACH

The first rule of the beach is: there are no rules. Dress codes go pretty much out of the window as soon as you step onto the sand, but that doesn’t mean letting yourself go completely. A smart pair of swimming trunks, like Gucci’s tape GG shorts, will take you from sea, to sun-lounger, to beachside bar in style (and provide a bit more security than a pair of budgie smugglers). Throw on a Tee for lunch and finish with a pair of sliders.

AL FRESCO DINING

Holidays might be about throwing off the shackles of day-to-day life, but it’s always nice to put a bit of effort in when heading out for a long leisurely lunch of sangria and fresh seafood. Nothing more unappealing than a bare chest over your paella. Lanvin’s striped T-shirt has a pleasingly holiday-ish, nautical appeal and, when paired with relaxed shorts and a pair of Valentino sandals, is more than smart enough for dining on a palm-shaded terrace in the sun.

SUMMER EVENINGS

Heady summer nights in a warmer climate, the chirping of cicadas, late night suppers al fresco, the calls for another round . . . Whatever your poison on holiday, make sure you look good whilst indulging in it. A camp collar shirt in a fun but understated print, like this one by Valentino, will ensure you look slick whilst maintaining the relaxed holiday vibes. Team with trousers and loafers for smarter venues or a pair of trainers, particularly if you’re gallivanting around a city at night.
