The How To: How To Choose A Winter Coat

The How To: How To Choose A Winter Coat

It’s officially autumn and in just over six weeks’ time we’ll be at the precipice of winter. Down sides: it’s getting colder and darker by the minute. Up sides: Christmas is on the way and you can get back into your winter wardrobe, meaning coats, layers and all. Whilst we dig the summertime and the freedom of shorts and T-shirts, we think most British men secretly love the comforting cocoon of their winter layers. They hide all manner of sins – beer bellies and pasty skin included. And above all else – surpassing even knitwear, sweatshirts, hoodies, hats and scarves – your winter coat is key to not only nailing your cold-weather look but, in practical terms, staying warm and dry. Here’s our guide to choosing an investment piece that will see you through season after season.

THE CULT BUY

Whilst there’s something comforting about bedding down in your old winter coat, a new season is the time to break the mould and try something new. Branch out from your standard parka or duffle with these sure-fire cult pieces from Off-White, Lanvin and Gucci. Some are bona fide streetwear, others streetwear-inspired. ‘What’s the difference?’ we hear you ask. Well, truth be told, very little when it comes down to aesthetics. These pieces will stay on the style agenda and resurge in trendiness as the years go by. Wear a heavy knit or sweatshirt underneath and prepare to turn some heads.

AN UPDATED CLASSIC

Classic single breasted coats and their more formal double breasted counterparts have a place in every man’s wardrobe, but we think AW18 calls for something a little extra. The world has moved on from simple camel coats and bog-standard aviators. This season, designers are mixing it up with shearling collars, colourful piping and sports-inspired details. Tired-and-tested cuts ensure these piece all have longevity, but new elements make them feel fresh and current, and even a little bad-ass. Whether you’re strolling to the local boozer or making a statement at a festive party, these coats and jackets will see you through winter in style.

PRACTICALITY IS KEY

A winter coat has to, above all else, be warm and protect you from the elements. Whether you’re hiking mountains or traversing the urban jungle, you need to stay dry in the rain. The bitter British winter is no joke, so we’d recommend looking to new and heritage brands with a reputation for technical excellence and practical design. Moncler and Canada Goose, hailing from the French Alps and Canada respectively, are giants in their field when it comes to down coats and jackets. Functional and stylish, they’re our go-to for a winter coat that is guaranteed to keep you warm and dry.
