The How To: How To Choose The Perfect Gift For Her

The most wonderful time of year will soon be upon us. Fairy-lit trees, overindulging on cheese and one too many glasses of fizz are high on our priorities list as work takes a back seat and partying takes over. The only thing that has the potential to diminish our joy? Christmas shopping. Luckily, we’re taking the stress out of gift-giving with a straight-talking guide to choosing the perfect present for her. Follow our advice to avoid panic-buying on Christmas Eve and disappointed faces come the big day. Here’s how to select the perfect designer gift for the stylish women in your life.

TAKE NOTES

We’re not suggesting that you whip out a pen pad and start scribbling away in front of her – that would ruin the element of surprise. Instead, some quiet observations and making a conscious effort to notice the things she likes will help you when it comes to choosing a gift she’ll love. Have a (non-creepy) snoop around her wardrobe, take note when she’s wearing something new, consider how she likes to spend her down-time. These simple things can uncover clues to her sartorial heart’s desire. If she’s a homebody who would happily swap a glass of champers for the couch any day of the week, some cosy knitwear or a designer sweatshirt will mean she can relax in style. Party girls will go ga-ga for anything glittery or glamorous. A sparkling Gucci clutch or pair of Giuseppe Zanotti heels are guaranteed to go down a storm. If she has a favourite pair of trainers, the same in an alternative colour are a sure-fire win. And if you’re really stuck despite your best efforts, stylish women will always appreciate quality designer essentials like a Tee, hat or scarf in white, black or navy.

LISTEN TO HER

Listening to your loved ones can pay dividends when it comes to selecting a gift for them later down the line. There’s a month to go, so tune your ear in now to start picking up cues. Sure, listening to your sister bore on about her frankly useless boyfriend can get tedious, and even best mates with a tendency to dramatise can be tiresome when you’re hearing in minute detail the story of her run-in with the next-door neighbour for the umpteenth time. Nevertheless, it is by listening that truly great gift-givers pick up all of their critical information. Try it now. “I lost one of my favourite earrings last week” translates as a luxe pair of designer earrings in her stocking. “I wish I was more adventurous with my style” can be interpreted as a statement piece by Valentino, Saint Laurent or Fendi. “I’m cold all the time” (an affliction we can all sympathise with) means you know she’ll appreciate a jacket or coat by Moncler. With this technique you’ll win the ‘best gift of 2018’ award with ease.

SIZE MATTERS. SOMETIMES.

The childlike joy of knowing there’s a big, beautifully-wrapped parcel waiting for you under the tree has no parallel. Sometimes, it’s just fun to tear the paper from a sizeable box containing a Gucci Dionysus, Saint Laurent Sac du Jour or Fendi Peekaboo. If you’re particularly busy in the run-up to Christmas (and who isn’t?) one meaningful, carefully considered present will cause you less stress and be just as impactful as multiple small ones. Why we equate size with superiority is a mystery (not), but we’re not necessarily talking about the physical dimensions of a gift here. The mammoth effort you put into sourcing a gift, a hefty price-tag (cheeky) and the huge amounts of time you spent thinking about it can all contribute to the theoretical ‘size’ of a present. And jewellery, watches, fragrances and small, very, very fine leather goods are all proof that big doesn’t necessarily mean better.
