The How To: How To Choose The Perfect Gift For Him

The How To: How To Choose The Perfect Gift For Him

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Or is it? The answer is yes, but there’s no denying that the pressure of present-giving can be a challenge. Christmas isn’t just about gifts, but we can all agree that they’re a pretty nice gesture and a good way of showing someone you care. To save you from the stress of panic-buying on Christmas Eve (no-one wants to be that person), we’ve put together a straight-talking guide to finding the perfect designer gifts for men.

OBSERVE YOUR PREY

Our choice of words might sound aggressive, but if the name of the game is winning ‘best gift of 2018’ then you need to be tactical. If you live with him, make the most of your advantage. Watch him in his natural habitat – does he have a predisposition for vegging out on the sofa? Is so, some elevated loungewear will keep him looking halfway decent even at his most slovenly. Has he got a sizeable trainer collection? We’re sure his favourite pair of Valentino Rockstuds in a different shade will go down a storm. If he’s dating, a smart shirt in which to graft. Or a phone case so he can at least swipe right in style (even if his chances of scoring a date are low – perhaps some advice on updating his profile wouldn’t go amiss either?). If you’re really stuck despite your well-intended voyeurism, you can’t go wrong with a Tee, sweatshirt, hat or scarf of good quality and branding pedigree in an essential colour.

LISTEN FOR ONCE

It might be a bit late now, but listening carefully to your loved ones over an extended period of time will pay dividends when it comes to choosing a gift for them. Yes, their inane chatter can be irritating and half of what comes out of their mouth on a day to day basis is a whine or a chide (you left your dirty dishes in the sink AGAIN last night). But it’s by listening that you pick up golden nuggets of information as to what they might really appreciate come Christmas day. Try it this week. “My wallet is falling to pieces” translates as a luxe leather wallet in his stocking. “I really should take better care of my trainers” can be interpreted as a cry for a new pair of Gucci sneakers. “I would like to be more adventurous with my aftershave” means you know he’ll appreciate a decadent Amouage scent. And if he’s hankering after tickets to the Travis Scott tour but you can’t quite stretch to a weekend in NYC – a piece of Saint Laurent should satisfy his new-age hip-hop urges.

SIZE MATTERS

If you have no time to search for a gift, or no inclination to try, you can guarantee that something sizeable and luxurious will impress the recipient, no-matter the energy expended procuring it. It might be an outrageous thing to say, but if you’re desperate and have given it no consideration (you’re a bad person) the least you can do is leave your loved ones something big under the tree. The sight of a giant present wrapped up in paper excites the child in everyone – even the most difficult family member.

Granted, you can still get it really wrong, and in the spirit of Christmas this is all relative – one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure, after all. A small parcel can have just as much impact as a big one. A pair of socks – elegant, fun or cool – can tick all the boxes if the giftee is in need or appreciative of good hosiery. The feeling of high-quality, densely woven cotton fitting snuggly around a man’s toes can be a daily joy for those who appreciate the smaller and finer things in life. Truly the gift that keeps on giving (if pedal comfort is important to you).
