The How To: What To Pack

The How To: What To Pack

Vacation preparation. Two words we’d rather not hear in the same sentence – although the success of the former relies heavily on the latter. When all you want to do is touch down at your destination of choice, slide on your trunks and head to the nearest beach, packing can feel like a chore. In an ideal world, someone would pack for you and the abs you’ve spent hours slavishly working on in the gym would magically appear on your perfectly groomed chest without effort. But, fail to prepare, and prepare to fail. There can be few bigger disappointments in life than landing in paradise to find you’ve forgotten your favourite sliders, or that your brand new shades have been left behind – neglected on the bedside table in a manner akin to Macaulay Culkin but with real-life implications. You’ve been looking forward to this trip for months, so don’t blow it by over-packing a suitcase only for it explode in the plane’s hold, or by forgetting this season’s hottest holiday essential – the Hawaiian shirt. Here’s our guide to what to pack for every summer destination – don’t forget your underwear.

LAID-BACK BEACH ESCAPE

Heading somewhere beachy-but-cultivated? You know the sort of place – where the club is strictly members-only and the jet-set in-crowd have private yachts moored in the marina and vintage cars in the drive. If you’re heading to the Riviera (or somewhere else of that ilk), cool but polished attire is de rigueur. Avoid looking like a financier who lost his way somewhere between the city and St Tropez (although you might be one) by combining preppy essentials (the obligatory polo and espadrilles) with slightly edgier pieces by Maison Margiela and LA’s brand-of-the-moment Rhude. Capri swim-shorts by Gucci and non-negotiables like a cap and classic Saint Laurent shades will compliment a neutral colour palette and sea-side shades of blue and green. See you at the Cabana.

CITY ON THE COAST

For the committed urbanites among us, empty stretches of sand with nothing but the local wildlife for company sound like a nice idea, but the reality bores us to tears. Instead, indulge your inner beach bum without relinquishing the convenience and buzz of a city at somewhere cosmopolitan and coastal – Miami, or Palma. For destinations like this, where the streets and nightlife are as hot as the beach, a slightly more practical but nonetheless stylish approach to packing is necessary. Think trainers like Gucci’s classic Ace Webs as well as sliders – for pavement-pounding and poolside relaxing. Versatile, streetwear-inspired staples like Off-White’s camo shorts are as at-home in the local after-hours establishments as they are at the beach – though don’t forget your swim shorts. And a rucksack – for sight-seeing essentials and general tourist necessities. You’ve got to look the part.

TROPICAL HOUSE PARTY

If you’re chasing the party in tropical climes, there are a few guiding principles for packing – we would be loath to call them rules. This is a holiday and a party combined, so, without descending into anarchy, all bets are off when it comes to (behaviour and) style. You need to strike the balance between fun and taste. Think of this as a hedonist’s guide to packing: alongside all of your normal holiday essentials (swimwear, shades, sliders), we recommend upping your game and branching out from the norm. Exploit your holiday confidence and wear a printed T-shirt you wouldn’t dream of parading at the local boozer. Always wanted to sport a canary-yellow Hawaiian shirt? We bet there’s no place it will look better than at the beach-side club in Hvar (although it may have seen better days come sunrise). Tropical-inspired prints from Palm Angels, Versace’s ‘80s nostalgia and block-coloured swim shorts should be on every directional party-boy’s packing list this summer. Remember to stay hydrated.
