On Trend: The New Season's Best Bags

With a welcome change in attitudes towards men’s fashion, the image of a bloke wearing a bag is no longer one that attracts derision. The term “manbag” was dropped c. 2016 and has been lost in the annals of history – along with leg warmers and MC Hammer pants. Now, men just wear bags, of all shapes and sizes and for all occasions without the gendered prefix. It’s liberating. The bum bag trend was one of our biggest take-homes from men’s fashion week, whilst the dependable backpack has long been our practical go-to for perennial accessorising. We’ve got bags of style – here’s our guide to the best of the season.

The definition of smart casual, a slick leather backpack will take you from the office to the pub in functional style. Wear with a short-sleeved shirt and athletic sneakers at the weekend or chinos and loafers for work.

What does a man want from his bag? An iconic monogrammed canvas, beautifully embossed leather, practical pockets, an adjustable strap and somewhere neat to put his stuff. Both MCM and Gucci’s version tick all the boxes and some. Technical and luxe.

Off-White’s creative director Virgil Abloh is basically the godfather of luxe streetwear, and his backpacks are a case in point. Finished with the brand’s signature industrial logo tape straps, wear with your favourite track top and a pair of box-fresh trainers.

Bum bags and over-the-head fleeces. We thought they’d been left in the ‘90s but they’ve resurfaced as some of the hottest trends of 2018. No longer the reserve of tourists, make the new season your trendiest yet by combining Valentino and Lanvin’s modern updates on revisited styles.
